Duke Shih has a wealth of work experience, beginning in 2007 as a Research Fellow at Academia Sinica, Taiwan. In 2008, they worked as a Quality Assurance Engineer at IBM. Duke then attended University of Toronto, where they worked as a Bachelor Researcher (Undergraduate Thesis) in 2009 and a Master Researcher in 2011. In 2014, they became a Doctoral Researcher at Imperial College London, where they studied Mass Transport and Electrochemical Properties of Sodium Bismuth Titanate (Na0. 5Bi0. 5TiO3, NBT) Based Electrolyte Materials. Duke also served as a Teaching Assistant for XRD, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Laboratory, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, and Mechanics. Additionally, they were a Global Summer School Demonstrator for Scanning Electron Microscopy. In 2019, they joined Itron, Inc. as a Materials Scientist (Principal Engineer). Duke's roles included being a principal technical resource advising on battery solutions, conducting root-cause failure analysis, reviewing material systems, cooperating with suppliers, and being an integral part of encapsulation and electronic packaging design. In 2021, they became Interim CTO at Natrion, an energy startup that develops safe and affordable batteries and battery components.
Duke Shih obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science in Materials Science & Engineering from the University of Toronto in 2010. Duke then went on to pursue a Master of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto, which they completed in 2013. In 2014, they began their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Materials Engineering at Imperial College London, which they completed in 2018. In addition, Duke Shih is an Imperial College London Alumni Ambassador, obtained in June 2020, and a U of T Alumni Volunteer obtained in June 2019 through Ten Thousand Coffees.
