Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake
Martin Connell is a seasoned engineering professional with a robust background in civil engineering, currently serving as the Engineering Manager for the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence at the Earthquake Commission (EQC) since April 2018. Previously, Martin held the position of Senior Engineer at Fletcher EQR from June 2014 to April 2018, where responsibilities included structural assessment, design, team management, and planning for earthquake repairs in the Canterbury region. Prior to that, Martin worked as an Intermediate Engineer at Fletcher Building from March 2011 to May 2014, focusing on structural inspections and repair solutions for earthquake-damaged properties. Martin also functioned as a Contracts Manager during this time, overseeing contractors to ensure safe and efficient repairs. Martin holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering from Technological University of the Shannon and is currently pursuing a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering at the University of Canterbury.

The Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tu Ake is New Zealand’s unique response to its geological environment. NHC Toka Tū Ake provides insurance cover for damage to residential property caused by earthquakes, landslips, volcanic eruptions, hydrothermal activity and tsunamis. All New Zealanders with home and/or contents insurance automatically receive NHCover. Other key functions include: Administering the Natural Disaster Fund, facilitating and supporting research to help build understanding of natural disasters and how to mitigate damage, and implementing education initiatives using school programmes, advertising and collateral.
