Nevan Hanumara

Advisor at NEMIC Foundation

Nevan Hanumara has been a research scientist for over a decade, co-teaching a medical device design course that annually brings together 40+ students to work in small teams with clinicians and companies to prototype solutions to pressing healthcare challenges. This has become a launchpad for ongoing research projects and even startups. In response to COVID-19, Nevan launched the MIT Emergency Ventilator Project which is focused on developing and immediately sharing the best information on safely automating a manual resuscitator bag, as a potential means for longer-term ventilation during a crisis. This is ongoing as we track projects around the world inspired by our work. Nevan is also working with the MIT Edgerton Center and the Fundación Mustakis, Recoleta, Santiago de Chile to develop extracurricular STEAM curricula for teenagers that blends art and science.

In addition to their work at MIT, Nevan has also served as a board member for Hospitality Homes, a 501(c) not for profit that provides warm hearts and homes away from home for patients and families coming to Boston for medical care. Nevan has also served as a senior advisor for the NEMIC - New England Medical Innovation Center and as an advisor for Intus Care and CathBuddy, Inc. For the past 8 years, Nevan has been a Recon Therapeutics advisor and they are also a co-founder of Cambridge Insights Group, LLC. Most recently, Nevan served as the Chief Science Officer for Raydiant Oximetry, Inc. and they are currently an advisor for Vidahora.

Nevan Hanumara received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2012, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006, and a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts in Mechanical Engineering and French from the University of Rhode Island in 2004.
