New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority
The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority (NJSEA) is the exclusive regional State agency covering the high-profile Meadowlands District. The multi-faceted, dynamic agency has historically supported operations at the MetLife Sports Complex and is the planning and zoning agency for the 30.4-square-mile Hackensack Meadowlands District, which consists of parts of 14 municipalities in Bergen and Hudson counties. MetLife Sports Complex is an internationally renowned sports and entertainment hub that has hosted world-class events including Super Bowl XLVIII and WrestleMania 29. It includes MetLife Stadium, home to pro football’s New York Giants and New York Jets; the New Meadowlands Racetrack, host of the Hambeltonian Stakes; and the Meadowlands Arena. The site is the future home of American Dream Meadowlands, a massive entertainment and shopping destination that will include indoor amusement and water parks, and an indoor ski slope. The NJSEA governs development in the Meadowlands District through its Land Use Management Department, whose engineers and planners regulate major industrial, commercial and residential projects within the region. Its Solid Waste and Natural Resources divisions protect, maintain and enhance the District’s unique urban ecosystem and park network. The Meadowlands Environmental Research Institute, operated in partnership with Rutgers University, uses cutting-edge technology to study the area’s vital wetlands. In addition, NJSEA’s Meadowlands Environment Center, operated by Ramapo College, provides highly popular, hands-on environmental science education programs to students in Grades K-12.
