Garrett Tate has a diverse work experience in the field of data science, geospatial analysis, and earth sciences. Garrett started their career at Chevron in 2014 as an Earth Scientist. After working there for two years, they moved on to Vanderbilt University in 2017, where they held several positions including Assistant Professor, Research Assistant Professor, and Senior Lecturer. At Vanderbilt, they conducted research on fault identification, rock uplift, and geologic mapping using MATLAB and ArcGIS. In 2022, Garrett joined New Light Technologies as a Senior Data Scientist and Research Associate. In this role, they led the development and deployment of a web application for FEMA, combining various data sources for disaster response planning. Garrett also worked as a consultant for the World Bank, applying big data and machine learning techniques to analyze economic and environmental changes in Yemen and building enumeration efforts for economic growth in Nigeria. Additionally, Garrett collaborated with Georgia State University and Fudan University on mental health research, calculating environmental and urbanicity indicators from satellite data.
Garrett Tate completed their Bachelor's degree in Earth Science and Mathematics at Rice University from 2005 to 2009. Garrett then pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Geosciences from Princeton University, which they obtained from 2009 to 2014. Additionally, Garrett has obtained several certifications, including The Data Incubator Data Science Fellowship from Pragmatic Institute in December 2021 and the Certified ScrumMaster® (CSM®) from Scrum Alliance in October 2022. Garrett has also completed various online courses such as the Applied Data Science With Python Specialization from the University of Michigan | Coursera, Databases: Advanced topics in SQL and Databases: Relational Databases and SQL from Stanford Online, and Spatial Analysis and Geospatial Data Science with Python from Udemy.
