Grant McAvaney

Grant McAvaney has a diverse work experience in the legal and media fields. Grant started their career as a Law Clerk at Minter Ellison and later became a Senior Associate and Partner/ Special Counsel at the same firm. During this time, they provided legal advice and litigation services in media law, including defamation, privacy, and copyright. Grant also conducted media law training and appeared in media interviews.

After leaving Minter Ellison, Grant worked as a Senior Legal Counsel at ninemsn/Mi9, where they provided corporate advisory and litigation services on a variety of legal issues. Grant then joined the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) as Head of Litigation, overseeing litigation practices and providing pre-publication advice.

Grant also has experience in teaching media law, having been a Lecturer at the University of South Australia and the University of Technology Sydney. In addition, they presented workshops on media law topics for the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA).

Grant further served as the Company Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Copyright Council and held the role of MC/Host for Hire. Currently, Grant is the Head of Litigation at News Corp Australia.

Grant McAvaney attended Clare High School from 1990 to 1994 and obtained a South Australian Certificate of Education. Grant then attended the University of Adelaide from 1995 to 1998 and pursued a degree in Commerce. From 1997 to 2000, they continued their studies at the University of Adelaide and obtained an Honours degree in Law. Grant McAvaney also received various certifications, including admissions to the Supreme Court of South Australia and New South Wales, as well as the Federal and High Courts of Australia. Grant also completed a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Society of South Australia in 2001.
