VP, Grid Modernization at Nexant

Sundar Venkataraman leads Nexant’s Grid Modernization Consulting Group. The focus of this group is to provide consulting services related to the planning, development, and operation of distributed energy resources, renewables, and large-scale energy storage projects. Sundar has more than 25 years of experience in providing consulting services related to power systems operations, planning, and markets. Leveraging his background in both the technical and commercial aspects of the power industry, he is able to provide comprehensive solutions to meet his customers’ needs. Sundar has led several high profile studies that have resulted in the development of techno-commercial roadmaps for integrating new and emerging technologies into the power grid. His work has resulted in the development of the first integrated wind, solar, and energy storage plant in India; new market products for the integration of renewable resources in California; the first purely merchant transmission line in the US, as well as a highly successful competition for microgrid projects in New York.

Sundar has a MS in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University and an MBA from Clarkson University. He is the Vice-Chair of the IEEE Power Systems Operation, Planning, and Economics (PSOPE) transmission planning workgroup, and the US representative for CIGRE study committee C6 on Active Distribution Systems and Distributed Energy Resources.
