Russell’s career in architecture spans more than 25 years in both international and domestic markets. His hands-on attitude to design has resulted in a number of high-profile awards such as the Andrew Doolan Award for Best Building in Scotland in 2009. Russell has enjoyed a breadth of experience throughout his career with emphasis in higher education and community-based work. His passion for design extends to a part-time role as design tutor at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, guest critic at Strathclyde University and panel member on the Glasgow Urban Design Review Panel for Glasgow City Council.
As a Director in NORR’s Glasgow Studio, Russell leads project teams in multiple sectors including Commercial, Education, Health Sciences, Residential and Sports & Recreation. He works closely with the client and design team from inception through to completion. His belief is that good design can be achieved with a simple idea and a good client relationship aligned to the project vision, context and budget. The result has been notable award-winning buildings designed and delivered for The University of Glasgow, University of Edinburgh, Royal Veterinary College, Glasgow City Council, NHS Greater Glasgow, the Weir Group, Highland Spring, Hutchesons’ Grammar School and The Big Lottery Fund.
Russell is a keen cyclist who commutes to work each day and sets out on weekend road trips around the West of Scotland. He is NORR’s champion at charity and business-related cycling events. Russell equates the sport to his continuous journey to redefine the built environment through architectural design.
