Dr. Murphy practices medicine at UNC Health Care in Chapel Hill in the Department of Anesthesiology, where he is the Vice Chairman for Clinical Operations. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the UNC School of Medicine. In 2012, Dr. Murphy chaired the Anesthesiology section of the National Medical Association and is an NC delegate to the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He also served as the president of the North Carolina Medical Board from 2019-2020.
