Lyle Humphrey is the associate curator of European art and collections history at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Lyle has held this position since July 2019. Prior to that, they were the assistant curator of European art at the North Carolina Museum of Art from July 2017 to July 2019. Lyle was also the GlaxoSmithKline curatorial fellow at the North Carolina Museum of Art from December 2013 to June 2017. Humphrey has also worked as a research associate at Duke University from September 2013 to August 2014 and as a visiting lecturer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from September 2012 to December 2012. Lyle was also a Jane and Morgan Whitney art history fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from December 2002 to May 2003. Humphrey has also interned at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from January 1999 to September 2000 and was an independent scholar from September 2007 to August 2012. Lyle was also the Theodore Rousseau fellowship at the Metropolitan Museum of Art from February 2002 to July 2002 and received a grant for research in Venice and the Veneto from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation from February 2001 to July 2002.
Lyle Humphrey attended Middlebury College for their Bachelor of Arts in Art Theirtory. Lyle then went on to study at New York University for both their Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Art Theirtory.
Lyle Humphrey reports to Linda Dougherty, Chief Curator & Curator of Contemporary Art. They work with Maya Brooks - Mellon Foundation Assistant Curator, Ángel González López - Research Curator of Ancient American Art, and Michele Frederick - Associate Curator of European Art & Provenance Research.
