Mazeda Hossain

Professor Of Global Health And Director Of The Eastern Africa Centre at Nottingham Trent University

Mazeda Hossain, PhD, has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of global health and conflict-affected settings. Mazeda currently holds the position of Professor of Global Health and Director of the Eastern Africa Centre at Nottingham Trent University, where they are involved in the development of a new global Index on societal wellbeing for fragile and conflict-affected settings. Mazeda is also the Co-Director of the GCRF Gender, Justice, and Security Hub, Methodological Innovations.

Prior to their current role, Dr. Hossain has held positions at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) as Honorary Professorial Research Fellow and Associate Professorial Research Fellow in Global Health. In these roles, they led a research team in developing a new global index on societal well-being for fragile and conflict-affected settings, and worked on innovative methodological approaches to improve research design and implementation among vulnerable populations.

Dr. Hossain has also been associated with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London, where they served as an Honorary Professor of Social Epidemiology and Assistant Professor of Social Epidemiology. Mazeda has contributed to the Lancet-SIGHT Commission on peaceful societies through health and gender equality as an Associate Researcher at SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute).

Furthermore, Dr. Hossain has worked as a Visiting Scientist at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute. Mazeda has previous experience with the World Food Programme as part of their Crisis Corps, focusing on monitoring and evaluation. Early in their career, they served as a Rural Water Sanitation & Health Volunteer with the Peace Corps and worked as a Program Officer for Women Waging Peace at the Hunt Alternatives Fund, specializing in database development and management.

Mazeda Hossain, PhD has a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Social Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London. Mazeda also holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Reproductive & Sexual Health Research (Public Health) from the same institution. Mazeda obtained their Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from Wellesley College. In addition, they have earned the Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy certification, specifically a Post-Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching, from the University of London in 2011.
