John B. Harley

Dr. John B. Harley has over 35 years of experience in immunology, genetic research, and clinical practice. He has made important contributions in the immunochemistry of autoimmunity and the genetics of autoimmune diseases, especially systemic lupus erythematosus. He is a Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine at the University of Cincinnati where he holds the David Glass Endowed Chair and is Director of the Center for Autoimmune Genomics and Etiology (CAGE) at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Harley is recognized as one of America’s leading experts on autoimmune diseases and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Dr. Harley’s extensive background includes various positions at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center from 1982 to 2010. In the Department of Medicine, his positions included Chief of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology Section and Vice Chair for Research. Dr. Harley was appointed George Lynn Cross Research Professor in 1999 and held the James R. McEldowney Chair in Immunology and Professor of Medicine beginning in 1992.

Dr. John B. Harley has served the medical research community in various capacities, especially for the National Institutes of Health and the US Department of Veterans Affairs, throughout his career. He was an Independent Director at ERBA Diagnostics, Inc. (previously, IVAX Diagnostics Inc.) from 2001 to 2014. In 1981 and 1982, Dr. Harley was a Postdoctoral Fellow in Rheumatology with the Arthritis Branch of the National Institute of Arthritis, Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, and an officer in the US Public Health Service. Before that, he was a research fellow at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London and a resident in Medicine at Yale University. Dr. Harley graduated with both MD and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.
