Marcel Levi (1964) studied and obtained his PhD in internal medicine at the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam. Marcel Levi has been chairman of NWO since 1 April 2021, succeeding Stan Gielen.
In 2000, Marcel became head of the Internal Specialisms department and division, and in 2010 became chairman of the Executive Board of the AMC and dean of the UvA's Faculty of Medicine. In 2009 he was elected a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and appointed as vice-chairman of the board of ZonMw. In his last position he was involved with NWO and in his last year interim chairman of ZonMw.
Before joining NWO, Marcel had been CEO of University College London Hospitals (UCLH) since 2016 and professor and clinical dean of University College London.
