Michelle Oppen has a diverse work experience spanning several organizations and roles. Michelle started their career as a Senior Health Educator and Research Associate at the Public Health Institute, where they led social marketing and evaluation activities for a pilot program on physical activity and nutrition. Michelle then moved on to work as a Community Health Planner at San Mateo County, where they spearheaded a taskforce and developed a strategic plan to reduce health disparities and prevent childhood obesity.
Michelle then joined Lucile Packard Children's Hospital as a Manager, where they focused on childhood obesity prevention and treatment. Michelle played a key role in planning, partnership-building, and advocacy efforts, including researching and advocating for health insurance coverage.
Currently, Michelle serves as the Director of Programs and Wellness Coordinator at the Oakland Unified School District. In this role, they conceptualized and centralized a large-scale education program and facility, collaborating with other departments and partners to create a strategic direction and multi-year plan. Michelle also manages and evaluates large-scale programs.
