Robert Rivas has been working in higher education since 2009. Robert started as a Graduate Research Assistant at Dona Ana Community College, where they worked for two years collecting data and writing reports pertaining to the program's accreditation. In 2011, they moved to New Mexico State University, where they worked as a teaching assistant for graduate-level Bilingual Education courses offered via distance education. In December 2011, they left New Mexico State University to take on the role of Chief of Staff at Odessa College.
