During their undergraduate studies, they spent a year as a visiting student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2007.

Following their undergraduate studies, Justin Tinsey continued their academic journey at Boston University, where they obtained their Master's degree in Global Development Policy in 2010. Additionally, they earned a certificate in African Studies during their time at Boston University.

In terms of additional certifications, Justin Tinsey obtained the Galileo Master Certificate in Energy Storage from The European Centre of Technology (ECT) in December 2020. Moreover, they acquired the Certified PV Professional certification from the Renewables Academy (RENAC) in September 2020.
