Elena Simperl has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of computer science and research. Elena is currently the Director of Research at the Open Data Institute, a position they have held since March 2023. Prior to that, they were a Professor of Computer Science at King's College London starting from February 2020. Elena also served as a Fellow of the British Computer Society at BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT since May 2019.
Before joining King's College London, Elena held positions at the University of Southampton, where they served as a Professor of Computer Science from June 2016 to February 2020 and as an Associate Professor from November 2012 to June 2016. Additionally, they were a Turing Fellow at The Alan Turing Institute from January 2019 to January 2020.
Earlier in their career, Elena worked as an Assistant Professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) / University of Karlsruhe (TH) from January 2010 to November 2012. Elena also served as the Vice Director at STI Innsbruck from April 2007 to December 2009. Elena started their research career as a Research Assistant at Freie Universität Berlin from August 2003 to March 2007 and at Technische Universität München from July 2002 to July 2003.
Elena Simperl has a strong educational background in computer science. Elena completed their undergraduate studies at the Technical University of Munich, where they obtained a degree in Computer Science (Dipl. Inf.) from 1998 to 2002. Following this, they pursued further education at the Freie Universität Berlin, where they obtained their Doctorate in Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) in Computer Science from 2003 to 2007.
