P. Scott Carney has a diverse work experience in the field of optics and engineering. P. Scott is currently serving as the Chief Science and Technology Officer at Optica since October 2021. Prior to this, Carney held the position of Editor-in-Chief at JOSA A from January 2016 to December 2021.

Carney also worked at the University of Rochester from July 2017 to June 2021, where they served as a Professor and the Director of The Institute of Optics. P. Scott played a crucial role in establishing the Institute as the first optics education program in the country, granting a significant number of degrees in the field.

In 2008, Carney joined Diagnostic Photonics, Inc. as the Chief Scientific Officer, where they led the development of algorithms and managed the engineering team working on microscopes. P. Scott'sresponsibilities also included writing proposals, overseeing engineering design processes, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

From 2001 to 2017, Carney worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During this time, they served as the Interim Director of the Innovation, Leadership, and Engineering Entrepreneurship Degree Program. P. Scott was also a Professor of electrical and computer engineering for 16 years.

Carney's earlier work experience includes being a Guest Researcher at CIC NanoGUNE from 2011 to 2015, where they collaborated on scanning near-field optical microscopy and developed computational imaging methods. P. Scott was also a Visiting Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2009 and a Research Associate at Washington University in St. Louis from 1999 to 2001, where they focused on near-field optics and diffusive imaging.

P. Scott Carney obtained a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Rochester, completing their degree between 1994 and 1999.
