Born in Nigeria, Emmanuel Akporiaye received their undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Ibadan in 1988. Emmanuel then pursued a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology at the University of Arizona, where they also did postdoctoral work in cancer immunology. In 1999, they became a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Arizona.
In 2008, Emmanuel left academia to join Veana Therapeutics Inc., a startup company developing cancer immunotherapies. Emmanuel then moved to the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, part of Providence Cancer Institute, where they served as director of translational research. In this role, they were responsible for leading a team of scientists and clinicians to develop new cancer treatments and bring them to clinical trials.
In 2014, Emmanuel became chief of scientific career development and division chief of experimental biology at Sidra Medical and Research Center in Qatar. In this role, they were responsible for developing curriculum, identifying and interacting with international partners for research career training and development for Sidra employees, including undergraduate and graduate students. Emmanuel was also responsible for recruiting principal investigators, strategic planning, resource and budget allocation for the division's research and educational
Emmanuel Akporiaye has a post-doctoral fellowship in cancer immunology from Los Alamos National Laboratory and a PhD in microbiology from The University of New Mexico. Emmanuel also has a master's degree in biology from New Mexico Highlands University.
