Orleans Community Health/Medina Memorial Hospital
Medina Memorial Hospital, in Medina, NY, had its beginnings in 1908, when it was incorporated by a group of citizens who were interested in establishing a publicly-owned hospital. It began serving the community's health needs with a 9-bed hospital in the Albert Sweet Home - at the corner of Eagle and Prospect Streets - in Medina. The present property was acquired in 1923, and construction began on a new hospital in 1924. Renovations and expansions took place in 1958, 1968-70, 1981-82, and 1990-91. While Medina Memorial Hospital remains the hub of our community health services, growth of services outside of the acute care setting led to our name being changed to Medina Memorial Health Care System in the late nineties. Our new name more accurately reflects the extensive range of health services we provide. Today, Medina Memorial Health Care System is a full-service community hospital, serving 45,000 residents in Orleans, eastern Niagara, and northern Genesee counties. It is the only full-service, acute care system in Orleans County, and is the largest non-government employer.
