Joseph McCartin has an extensive work history in the field of data science and engineering. Joseph started their career as a Teacher Assistant at the University of Canterbury in 2009 before moving on to work at CERN as a Visitor Guide. In 2011, they began their doctoral studies in Particle Physics at Ghent University, where they focused on analyzing top quark data at the CMS experiment. As part of their research, they spent two years at CERN.
After completing their doctorate in 2014, Joseph joined Deloitte UK as a Senior Consultant, where they worked on client engagements involving analytics and data science. Joseph played a key role in developing a services delivery throughput model for a major telecommunications provider and provided bulk analytics using relational databases for a financial services regulator.
In 2017, they became a Data Scientist at Think Big, a Teradata Company, where they implemented continuous deployment and developed analytical methods for network optimization and customer call prediction. Joseph then worked as a Big Data Developer at Quantexa in 2018 before joining Outra as a Senior/Lead Big Data Developer in 2019. In this role, they oversaw the migration to Apache Spark and advised on implementing production best practices.
Joseph's next position was at Vodafone in 2020, where they worked as a Machine Learning Engineer. Joseph collaborated with data scientists to productionize code and develop robust ETL and modeling frameworks for projects related to the impact of COVID-19 on retail stores.
In 2020, Joseph joined Culture Trip as a Senior Machine Learning Engineer and later became the Tech Lead for the data unit. Joseph led the re-writing of data science projects for productionization and developed new platforms for data orchestration and data lakes. Joseph also managed a team of data engineers for workflow migration.
Their most recent role is at Our Future Health UK, where they hold the position of Technical Lead - Data Platforms since April 2022.
Joseph McCartin completed their Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Physics at the University of Canterbury from 2004 to 2007. Joseph then pursued a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Physics at the same university from 2007 to 2009. Following that, Joseph attended Ghent University from 2010 to 2014, where they earned their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Elementary Particle Physics.
