Tobias Zehnder is a Senior Computational Biologist at OWKIN since March 2023, having previously held the position of Research Scientist. Tobias served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at CHARITE UNIVERSITATSMEDIZIN BERLIN from February 2021 to February 2022, where leadership in an international collaboration focused on bat wing evolution and experience in project management, mentoring PhD students, and contributing to grant proposals were key accomplishments. Prior to this, Tobias completed a PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, developing a machine learning algorithm for predicting gene regulatory elements, and conducted a research stay at the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences, creating a method for detecting evolutionary conservation in diverged genomes. Academic credentials include a PhD in Bioinformatics from Freie Universität Berlin, an MS in Computational Biology from the Biozentrum, University of Basel, and a BS in Molecular Biology from the University of Basel.

It leverages its collaborative federated learning software and expert AI capabilities to bring solutions to optimize drug development and improve patient care in oncology. Owkin’s work has been published in Nature Medicine and other top-tier journals. Owkin has raised over $70M from leading VC funds and is now working with the most prominent cancer centers and pharmaceutical companies in Europe and the US. Additionally, Owkin leads several federated learning consortia, including; MELLODDY, to facilitate 'co-opetive' drug discovery between pharma companies, and Healthchain, to allow collaborative research across multiple hospitals. Owkin was co-founded in 2016 by Thomas Clozel, MD, a clinical research doctor and former assistant professor in clinical hematology, and by Gilles Wainrib, Ph.D., an academic pioneer in the field of Artificial Intelligence in biology.
