Principal Data scientist at Owlin

Willem Westra, PhD, has a diverse work experience that spans multiple fields. Willem started their career as a PhD student at Utrecht University, where they worked from 2003 to 2007. After completing their PhD, they joined the University of Iceland as a Postdoctoral researcher, focusing on finding analytically solvable models that unify gravity and quantum mechanics. Willem later became an Associated researcher at the same university.

In 2012, Westra took on the role of Principal Data scientist at Owlin, a company that specializes in detecting events, analyzing the web, and ranking news. Their responsibilities included developing a system that pushed relevant news to users' dashboards and provided real-time in-depth analysis of news topics.

In addition to their roles in academia and at Owlin, Westra also worked as a Financial consultant at AJS Consultancy from January to October 2012. Willem provided financial advice and expertise to clients during this time.

Westra's work experience also includes serving as an Independent Evaluator for the Horizon 2020 program at the European Commission in 2014. This program aims to fund research and innovation projects and take ideas from the lab to the market.

Throughout their career, Westra has gained expertise in areas such as quantum field theory, combinatorics, matrix models, string field theory, and stochastic differential equations. Willem has a strong background in both academia and industry, with experience in research, data science, and financial consulting.

Willem Westra, PhD, obtained their Master of Science degree in Theoretical Physics from Utrecht University between 1998 and 2003.
