Samantha Erwin

Samantha Erwin, PhD has a diverse work experience in various research and teaching roles. Starting in 2010 as an Undergraduate Researcher at BioMAPS, they collected biological samples and used population projection matrices for prediction. Samantha then worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where they collaborated on developing a pharmacodynamics model for HIV monoclonal antibody therapy. In 2011, they became a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Virginia Tech, where they later worked as a Graduate Research Assistant focusing on computational fluid dynamics for indoor air climate control. In 2013, they served as a Mathematical Modeling Instructor at Johns Hopkins Center For Talented Youth, organizing curriculum and teaching gifted high school students. From 2017 to 2019, they were a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at North Carolina State University, specializing in modeling high throughput omics data from the murine microbiota. Samantha then joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a Computational Scientist, utilizing machine learning and deep learning to analyze various datasets, including those related to COVID-19 and cancer pathology. Currently, they are working at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a Senior Data Scientist and Team Lead, focusing on One Health and Biodefense projects involving data curation, analysis, and the development of machine learning models and user interfaces.

Samantha Erwin, PhD, has an extensive education history in mathematics. Samantha began their academic journey by earning a Commonwealth Diploma from Dixie Heights High School between 2001 and 2006. Samantha then pursued their undergraduate studies at Murray State University, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Business from 2006 to 2011. Samantha continued their education at Virginia Tech, where they earned a Master of Science degree in Mathematics from 2011 to 2013. Samantha furthered their studies at Virginia Tech and completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mathematics between 2013 and 2017.
