Renato Oliveira e Souza has extensive experience in the field of mental health and psychosocial support. Renato has worked for various international organizations such as the Pan American Health Organization, World Health Organization, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
In their most recent role as the Chief of Mental Health and Substance Use at the Pan American Health Organization since April 2020, Renato is responsible for leading and managing mental health and substance use programs.
Prior to that, they served as a Mental Health Consultant at the World Health Organization from February to March 2020.
Renato's experience with ICRC includes serving as the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Specialist at the headquarters from August 2019 to January 2020. Renato also held the position of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Regional Specialist for the Near and Middle East from February 2018 to July 2019.
Their work as a Psychiatrist in Minas Gerais, Brazil from July 2013 to December 2017 allowed him to gain practical experience in the field.
Renato's career began with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) where they worked as a Mental Health Adviser at the headquarters in Geneva from August 2005 to January 2010. Prior to that, they served as a Mental Health Officer from November 2002 to July 2005.
Throughout their career, Renato has demonstrated a strong commitment to mental health and psychosocial support in various contexts and settings.
Renato Oliveira e Souza has a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, obtained between 1990 and 1996. Renato then pursued a specialization in Psychiatry at USP - Universidade de São Paulo from 1996 to 1999. Following that, they completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Psychiatry at King's College London from 1999 to 2000. Lastly, they obtained a Master of Science (MS) degree in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London, during the period of 2007 to 2008.
