Edgar N. Gonzalez

As a prior active duty military officer in the U.S. Coast Guard, Edgar Gonzalez is known for his ability to bring people together to achieve resolutions, both in and out of the courtroom, and for providing solutions to policy makers and program managers on complex, technical matters. He brings these skills for problem solving and coalition building to Patterson + Sheridan, where he handles intellectual property litigation as well as patent preparation and prosecution.

Before joining the firm, Edgar served five years as a JAG military attorney advising the Coast Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the Intelligence Community on national security and cyber law matters including law enforcement and intelligence operations, intelligence oversight programs, the implementation of intelligence systems, and the development of risk-management frameworks for data privacy. He handled a variety of litigation matters including representing service members on administrative boards and advising on criminal and civil proceedings. In addition, Edgar handled major internal investigations and led the agency’s review of corporate transactions for the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) covering critical technologies, critical infrastructure, and sensitive personal data.

This military experience proved to be a unique legal training ground for his IP practice: it required earning the trust of senior leaders and commanding officers as a junior attorney; it meant negotiating with international partners and understanding cultural nuances; and it involved managing teams when responding to emergent situations and national emergencies.

Prior to law school, Edgar was a research chemist in the oil and gas industry, where he worked with a variety of chemical applications for oil services including upstream, downstream, and drilling fluids. He also worked alongside engineers in the material science group, where he leveraged his background in chemistry and mathematics to aid with research and development. During his undergraduate studies, Edgar was a Welch Chemistry Research Scholar focusing on biochemistry and biosensor development, and he was a summer research scholar at Baylor College of Medicine.

Edgar is currently working towards a graduate degree in cyber intelligence and data analytics from the National Intelligence University. He is proficient in computer programming algorithms and studies machine learning and artificial intelligence technologies.

In his free time, Edgar enjoys spending quality time with his family. He also enjoys playing and teaching the piano and guitar.
