Jesus Cano

Jesus Cano is an associate in Patterson + Sheridan’s Houston office. He works to protect his clients’ intellectual property by preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, clean technologies, telecommunications, medical devices and procedures, electronics, semiconductors and transportation.

Jesus is passionate about patent law and helping inventors and creators, like himself, protect their work. In addition to his previous patent attorney roles, his professional experience includes serving as an Assistant District Attorney in El Paso, representing the Public Utility Commission of Texas and, most recently, working as a national patent examiner.

Prior to his legal practice, Jesus worked in a research lab throughout law school developing combustion materials. Designing these materials granted him a deeper understanding of the importance of patents and how he can best help other inventors protect their hard work. While earning his law degree, Jesus also learned the patent development process firsthand by working as an intellectual property analyst in Texas Tech’s technology transfer office, commercializing research and technology developed at the university.

Jesus worked as a patent examiner for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for one year, gaining valuable inside knowledge of the office’s policies and application process — all of which he now leverages to his clients’ advantage. While there, he focused on technologies involving radiofrequency communication in medical devices.

With degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering and a sharp attention to detail, Jesus understands the complex technologies and needs of inventors. His experience in both litigation and at the USPTO developed him into a well-versed lawyer who understands the intricate aspects of securing IP protections for clients.

Jesus holds both a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and his Juris Doctor from Texas Tech University. He is currently earning a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University. Jesus is a member of the American Intellectual Property Association and the National Association of Practitioners. He’s also been featured as a writer in the Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property.
