Michael Lew

Since joining the firm in 2013, Michael Lew has applied his extensive computer science background to helping inventors acquire and maintain their intellectual property. His involvement with complex technologies first began in high school, when Michael worked in the controls and diagnostics division of Diamond Power International, a global leader in boiler cleaning equipment. There, Michael developed and maintained proprietary software modules for intelligent boiler cleaning systems, and gained valuable experience in industrial communications technologies and the development of user interfaces for SCADA systems.

Michael later attended George Mason University School of Law, where, in addition to his coursework, he interned with the United States Air Force’s Commercial Litigation Directorate and a patent law boutique in the Northern Virginia area. This experience would expose him to technical data rights issues in government contracting, patent analyses in support of government administrative claim positions, and the preparation of patent applications directed to mechanical devices and computerized simulators. Michael was also a member of the George Mason Journal of International Commercial Law and served as Notes Editor during the 2012-13 academic year on a select team of student editors.

After completing his J.D., Michael got right to work preparing patent applications for telecommunications equipment and oilfield sensing devices. He now partners with a variety of software and telecommunications companies, and primarily focuses on patent prosecution, client counseling, and litigation support. Michael’s work truly speaks for itself and is best reflected in the strength of his client’s IP portfolios. With a growing reputation for his high energy and enthusiasm, Michael offers his clients solid advice for some of their biggest pain points while helping to streamline efforts that contribute to a comprehensive business strategy.

Outside of work, Michael can usually be found training for one of his biggest goals: running a half marathon or marathon in every state. If he’s not running, Michael can be found in Charlottesville cheering on the sports teams of his alma mater, the University of Virginia. He is also an active member of Patterson + Sheridan’s community outreach committee.
