Steven E. Roberts

Partner at Patterson + Sheridan

Steven Roberts has in-depth knowledge of a wide range of complex technologies, including front-end signaling and biomedical applications. Before joining Patterson + Sheridan, he designed precision test instruments and medical ultrasound equipment as an electrical design engineer at National Instruments and Acuson (now Siemens Ultrasound). This experience has helped him effectively draft patent applications in areas ranging from analog circuits and electronics front-ends to consumer products, medical devices, optics and downhole tools.

Able to hit the ground running, Steven seamlessly works with inventors on the highly technical descriptions of their inventions, assuring that no detail is too complex to translate into layman’s terms and draft a more effective application. He thoroughly interviews clients on product and process specifics, often uncovering unforeseen patentable aspects of the invention.

For instance, in seeking patent protection for a client’s circuit board layout technique, Steven attended an internal training course alongside the client’s engineers to fully understand the invention from every angle to ensure maximum protection. He explored a wide range of alternative layout ideas — even less-than-stellar ones — to broaden the claims for his client.

Since joining Patterson + Sheridan in 2006 as a technical advisor, Steven has effectively helped clients protect their invaluable IP through patent prosecution and opinion work, as well as strategic counseling. His attention to detail and comprehensive work ethic have led to an impressive track record with the Patent Trial and Appeals Board (PTAB).

Existing clients aren’t the only ones who benefit from his approach and fierce attention to detail — senior partners at the firm include Steven in prospective client relationships where electronics experience is vital.

In addition to U.S. patent work, Steven practices international patent law in accordance with the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and works closely with foreign associates to prepare and prosecute patent applications in various regions, such as in Europe, Japan, South Korea and Canada.

In his free time, Steven enjoys wakeboarding, playing competitive volleyball, drumming in a rock band and riding his sportbike.
