Matthew Cherry

Chief Economist at Payment Systems Regulator

Matthew Cherry has a diverse work experience in the field of economics and policy. Matthew began their career as a Consultant at Lexecon from 1996 to 1999. Matthew then worked as a Head of Competition Economics at the Office of the Rail Regulator from 1999 to 2001. From 2001 to 2002, they were the Head of Regulatory Economics at Telewest Communications PLC. Following this, they worked as a Managing Economist at LECG in 2003 and as an Economist at Hutchison 3G UK Ltd from 2004 to 2009.

In 2009, they joined FTI Consulting as a Director and then served as the Interim Airport Regulation Manager at easyJet from 2010 to 2011. From 2011 to 2014, they were the Head of Economic Regulation at Everything Everywhere Ltd.

Matthew then worked at BT as the Head of Regulatory Policy from 2014 to 2017. Currently, they hold the position of Chief Economist at the Payment Systems Regulator, where they previously served as the Senior Manager - Economist and Interim Head of Policy.

Matthew Cherry's education history includes a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Competition Law from King's College London in 2001, a Master of Science (MSc) in Economics from UCL in 1995-1996, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Modern History and Economics from the University of Oxford in 1991-1994, and secondary education at Winchester College from 1985-1990.
