Pearl Street Technologies
Jay Apt is a Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business and in the CMU Department of Engineering and Public Policy. He is the Co-Director of the Carnegie Mellon Electricity Industry Center and Director of the RenewElec (renewable electricity) project. Professor Apt received an A.B. in physics from Harvard College in 1971 and a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the Metcalf Lifetime Achievement Award for significant contributions to engineering.

Pearl Street Technologies, Inc. is an early stage startup out of Carnegie Mellon developing next-generation software for the electric utility industry. Pearl Street Technologies, Inc. is based in Pittsburgh, PA and backed by the National Science Foundation, ARPA-E, the Department of Energy, and Incite Labs, they are building tools to make the grid more reliable, more secure, and greener. They development activities include software for grid planning with high renewable penetration, parallelized optimization tools to find the most cost and energy efficient dispatch of grid resources, and solutions to detect targeted cyber attacks on the grid.
