Tom Stoessel

Executive Vice President, Chief Of Strategy & Transformation at Penn State Health

As executive vice president, chief strategy officer and chief transformation officer, Tom Stoessel is responsible for the growth of the Penn State Health system, with a focus on enhancing coordination, fostering innovation and creating maximum value for patients, employers, referring physicians and others.

Stoessel oversees the systemwide development and administrative leadership of clinical service lines and virtual care strategies and seeks ways to drive innovation in the delivery of care. His responsibilities also include administrative oversight of strategic planning, health network development, and marketing and communications functions for the health system.

He has extensive experience in strategic planning, market development, physician network development, clinical program development, mergers and acquisitions and academic affiliations, as well as a background in marketing, branding and crisis communications and issues management.

Stoessel previously served PinnacleHealth as senior vice president, strategic planning and business development where he developed the high-level strategic direction for the organization. He held ultimate responsibility for year-over-year growth of all health system service and product lines and the development of new ventures and businesses. Stoessel also served in a leadership capacity for all merger, acquisition and affiliation activity, including hospital system expansion, as well as growth of the primary and specialty care physician network.

Prior to PinnacleHealth, Stoessel was senior vice president and chief strategy officer for Mount Nittany Health System where he produced significant growth and expansion, including a complete rebranding, development of a new inpatient tower, expanded emergency department, launch of an affiliated cancer institute, consummation of a master academic affiliation and the founding and build-out of the employed physician network.

Earlier in Stoessel's career, he was a shareholder in one of Pennsylvania’s largest marketing and strategic planning consultancies.

Stoessel earned a Master of Business Administration from Penn State’s Smeal College of Business and holds a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University’s College of Communications.
