Michael J. Büsges

Michael J. Büsges is the Interim VP, IT & CIO at Penn State University. Michael has over 25 years of experience in IT and has been involved in major implementations at several universities.

Büsges started their career as an Implementation Specialist at The Catholic University of America, where they worked for 11 years. Michael then became a PhD Fellow at Rutgers University and worked there for five years before moving into the private sector.

In 2001, Büsges joined Sierra-Cedar as a Senior Consultant. Michael worked on PeopleSoft 8.X Student Administration System Implementations at various universities, including Salisbury University, University of Maryland - Eastern Shore, Coppin State University, Sonoma State University, Central Washington University, University of Central Florida, and Florida A&M University.

In 2004, Büsges left Sierra-Cedar to become the Project Director at UMBC, where they oversaw UMBC's implementation of PeopleSoft's Campus Solutions system. Michael remained at UMBC until 2011, when they returned to Sierra-Cedar as a Senior Consultant/Project Manager. In this role, they managed the Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions Implementation at the University of Texas - Health Science Center at Houston.

Büsges left Sierra-Cedar again in 2013 and has been with Penn State University ever since. Michael was promoted to Interim VP, IT & CIO in 2019.

Michael J. Büsges received their M.A. and M.Ph. in German Literature from Rutgers University. Michael also holds a “Staatsexamen” (Secondary Education Degree) with a Major in German Language & Literature and Minors in Philosophy and Secondary Education from Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf. Michael J. Büsges’s educational career began at Steinbart Gymnasium Duisburg, where they received their “Abitur”.

Michael J. Büsges reports to Eric J. Barron, President. They are on a team with William Sitzabee - Vice President for Facilities Management and Planning, Michael Wade Smith - SVP, Chief of Staff, and Stephen M. Massini - Chief Executive Officer, Penn State Health.
