Heather Cotching is an accomplished professional with extensive experience in economic analysis and policy development. Currently serving as Branch Head for both the Data, Digital and Analytics Branch and Strategic Planning and Data at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet since July 2023, Heather has previously held the position of Chief Economist at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission from April 2019 to July 2023. With a background that includes senior advisory roles in behavioral science and economic outlook management at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet and the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, Heather has a proven track record in analyzing economic trends and coordinating policy development, particularly within the Murray-Darling Basin Authority. Heather's academic credentials include a Graduate Certificate in Management from The Australian National University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the University of Tasmania.

The Department is home to several Commonwealth entities and is responsible for the Office for Women, Office for Best Practice Regulation (OBPR), Office of G20 Sherpa and Behavioural Economics Team of Australia (BETA).
