Melissa Birk has a long and varied work experience. Melissa started as a Network Technician at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 2002. Melissa then took on an Information Technology Specialist Internship with the U.S. Army in 2006. After that, they were a Computer Technician at Dakota State University in 2006. From 2008 to 2013, they were an Information Systems Manager at the U.S. Department of State. Melissa then moved on to become a Network Administrator at Solving Tech in 2013. In 2017, they began working as an Adjunct Faculty Instructor at Gillette College. Most recently, they have been the Director of Information Technology at Peregrine Global Services since 2013.

Melissa Birk obtained a Bachelor's degree in Computer Networks and Security from Dakota State University in 2008, after beginning their studies in 2006. Melissa then went on to pursue a Master's degree in Computer and Information Systems Security/Information Assurance at the same university, which they completed in 2013.
