Stephen Van Dien

Stephen Van Dien has a diverse work experience in the bioscience industry. Stephen is currently serving as the Co-Founder and CTO of Persephone Biosciences since July 2017. Stephen is also working as a Consultant at KALION, INC. since September 2017.

Previously, Stephen held various roles at Genomatica from 2004 to 2017, including Senior Director of Technology, Director of Strain Engineering, and Senior Research Scientist. Stephen played a key role in developing commercial processes for the conversion of renewable resources to basic and intermediate chemicals. Stephen also led the company's first commercial development project, engineering E. coli to produce a commodity chemical.

In addition, Stephen has worked as a Consultant at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability from September 2017 to December 2018. Stephen served as the President of the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology from July 2018 to August 2019.

Prior to this, they worked as a Research Scientist at Ajinomoto Co. from September 2002 to September 2003.

Stephen Van Dien received their Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Rice University in 1991. Stephen then pursued further education and completed their PhD in Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley between 1993 and 1998.
