Stephen J. Thomas, MD has an extensive work experience in the medical field. In 2011, they began working at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research as the Zika Program Lead, Deputy Commander for Operations, and Director of the Viral Diseases Branch. In 2013, they began working at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as an Infectious Diseases Staff Physician. In 2014, they began working at the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command as the Team Leader of the USAMRMC Ebola Response Management Team, and as the Infectious Diseases Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General at the U.S. Army Medical Command. In 2016, they founded Cormac Life Sciences, LLC and began working as the Chief Executive Officer. In 2018, they began working at the Institute for Global Health and Translational Sciences (IGHTS) as the Director. In 2019, they co-founded Phairify, Inc. and began working as the Director of Strategy. In 2021, they began working at SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital as the Chair (interim) of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. Finally, in 2022, they began working at SUNY Upstate Medical University as the Frank E. Young, MD '56 and Leanne Young Endowed Chair of Microbiology & Immunology.

Stephen J. Thomas, MD completed their medical education in the following order: a BA in Biomedical Ethics from Brown University (1988-1992); a Medical Doctor from Albany Medical College (1992-1996); a Residency in Internal Medicine from Walter Reed Army Medical Center (1996-1999); and a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases from the National Capital Consortium (1999-2002). Additionally, they have obtained three certifications: a Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler's Health from the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (November 2002); Board Certification in Infectious Diseases from the American Board of Internal Medicine (November 2002); and Board Certification in Internal Medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine (August 1999).
