Charlie Burns

Head of Human Resources at Pilbara Minerals Limited

Charlie Burns has over 23 years of work experience in various positions related to human resources and organizational development. Charlie started their career in 1996 as a Military Psychologist in the Australian Army. After leaving the Army in 2000, they joined Rio Tinto Iron Ore as a Human Resources Graduate/Consultant.

Charlie then worked at Rio Tinto Coal Australia as a Senior Human Resources Advisor from 2000 to 2003. From 2003 to 2006, they worked at Argyle Diamonds as the Superintendent Organizational Development. During this time, they led a team and supported the company's transition from an open cut to an underground operation.

In 2006, Charlie joined Rio Tinto Minerals as the Corporate Human Resources Manager, where they provided HR business partnering support to the executive team and led global organizational development projects. Charlie stayed with Rio Tinto Minerals until 2009.

Charlie returned to Rio Tinto in 2009, this time at Rio Tinto's headquarters. Charlie initially served as the Human Resources Manager for East Pilbara and Greater Brockman Operations, leading a team and providing operational HR support to multiple sites. From 2011 to 2013, they took on the role of Human Resources Director for Growth Programs, where they defined workforce requirements and implemented strategies for workforce attraction and retention.

In 2013, Charlie became the Business Lead for HR Transformation, representing the international Rio Tinto Iron Ore Product Group on a global team. In this role, they were responsible for designing and implementing a new HR delivery model to improve service delivery and reduce costs. Charlie then moved on to INPEX in 2015, where they served as the People and Culture Manager until 2019. In this role, they led a team and provided support for talent management, leadership development, and change management for the Ichthys LNG Project.

Most recently, Charlie worked at Pilbara Minerals Limited as the Head of Human Resources starting in 2019.

Charlie Burns has a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from The University of Western Australia and a Masters degree in Organisational Psychology from Curtin University.
