Joe Butler has a diverse work experience in the energy and transportation industries. Joe has held various roles in different companies throughout their career. Joe started working at Exxon Mobil in 2000, where they primarily focused on IT business analysis and project management. At Exxon Mobil, they played a key role in the deployment of the Intelatrac system for preventative maintenance. In 2006, Joe joined Shell Oil as a Senior Supply Chain Analyst, working on projects in the Gulf of Mexico and Brazil. Joe then moved to Pilot Flying J in 2007, where they held multiple roles, including National Supply Manager and Fuel Supply & Optimization Director. In these roles, Joe led teams responsible for ensuring fuel supply for travel plazas and convenience stores, and they also conducted research on natural gas conversion using CNG and LNG. In 2017, Joe joined the Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking as a member of the Board of Directors. Most recently, in 2020, they became a member of the Board of Directors at the Transportation Energy Institute.

Joe Butler completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Management of Information Systems at Brigham Young University from 1994 to 1999. Later, they pursued a Master of Engineering degree in Logistics, Materials, and Supply Chain Management at MIT Global SCALE Network from 2005 to 2006. Simultaneously, they also completed a Master of Science degree in Engineering of Logistics at Universidad de Zaragoza during the same time period.
