Nina Birchard

Design and Insights Engineer at Planera

Nina Birchard has a diverse work experience spanning various industries. Nina is currently working as a Design and Insights Engineer at PLANERA since January 2023. Prior to that, they served as a Design Engineer at the same company from November 2021 to February 2023.

In 2021, Nina founded and served as the CEO of Wrap Designs, where they developed a novel medical device to assist health professionals in caring for sick newborn babies in low resource settings. This project was supported by Innovate UK, Scottish Enterprise, and Princes Trust.

From 2019 to 2021, Nina worked as a Product Design Engineer at COHESION Medical. In this role, they focused on product design, information architecture, visual identity, and service design for COHESION's digital healthcare system. Nina actively improved product accessibility through virtual co-design workshops with end users and clients, including the NHS and third sector organizations. Nina also led the design team for a 6-month Innovate UK project.

Prior to COHESION Medical, Nina gained experience as an Arts & Crafts/Cabin Camp Counsellor at Camp Robindel For Girls from June 2015 to August 2019. Their responsibilities included supporting a group of campers, nurturing their well-being and personal growth, and leading creative activities in the art barn. During this time, they also developed conflict resolution and leadership skills.

In 2018, Nina interned as an Advanced Product Development Intern at Laerdal Medical. Nina gained valuable experience in advanced product development during this time.

Nina's work experience also includes a role as a Product Launch Intern at Soundbops from June 2017 to May 2018. Nina joined as the second employee and contributed to the preparation for the Kickstarter campaign of the "Soundbops" musical children's toy. Their responsibilities included product design, sketching, social media management, and video editing.

In addition, Nina has worked as a waitress at Eusebi Deli from May 2017 to July 2017 and at Zizzi Restaurants from March 2014 to May 2016.

During their time at Equate Scotland from September 2015 to June 2016, Nina served as an Interconnect Student Champion. Nina organized successful events to promote gender equality within the School of Engineering and established a prominent social media presence for the Equate network. Nina also led visits for students to local design and engineering businesses.

From 2014 to 2019, Nina studied at The Glasgow School of Art and the University of Glasgow, earning a Master of Engineering (MEng) degree in Product Design Engineering.

In 2017 and 2018, Nina participated in the Erasmus + Programme at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), focusing on Product Design Engineering.

In 2013, Nina took part in the Scottish Space School Programme, where they studied Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Prior to college, Nina attended Notre Dame High School from 2009 to 2014.

In terms of additional certifications, Nina obtained a certification in UX Deep Dive: Usability Testing from LinkedIn in July 2021.
