Geert Smekens has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. Geert started their career in 1984 as a Werfleider at Vantametaal and then worked as a Werfleider at Alfa Laval from 1989 to 1991. Geert then worked as a Projectleider at Siersema bv from 1991 to 1996, at Ensysta - (Actemium België) from 1998 to 1999, and at Hyline B.V. from 1999 to 2000. Geert also worked as a Project Manager at COFELY FABRICOM - GDF SUEZ Group from 2000 to 2002. In 2002, Geert became the Owner of Gelis bvba until 2007.
From 2008 to 2015, Geert held various roles at Genzyme, including Maintenance Manager and Manager Maintenance & Metrology - Maintenance Global Steerco Board Member (USA/Europe). In these positions, they were responsible for aligning maintenance and calibration guidelines and work processes on a global scale.
Since 2017, Geert has been working at Plasma Industries Belgium, first as a Maintenance Manager and currently as a Sr Lead Engineering. In their current role, they develop, manages, plans, executes, and adjusts maintenance and calibration activities to ensure technical reliability. Geert is also responsible for site security and ensuring the operational functionality of utilities systems.

Geert Smekens attended the Hoger technisch instituut St. Antonius Gent from 1981 to 1984, where they obtained a degree in Mechanica - Auto Mechanica.
