Emily Kawabata

Emily Kawabata has a diverse work experience in the field of bioinformatics and computational biology. Emily currently holds the position of Computational Biologist I at Pluton Biosciences, starting in March 2023. Prior to this, they worked at Bayer Crop Science as a Bioinformatics Specialist from March 2021 to July 2023. Emily also served as a Bioinformatics Specialist at Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc. from October to December 2022. Emily's earlier experiences include a role as a Bioinformatics Technician at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute from February 2020 to February 2021. Before that, they worked as a Part-time Research Engineer at In Vitro Diagnostics Vision, where they were involved in software optimization, algorithm development, and statistical analysis using Python. Emily also worked as a Student Researcher at Gaasterland Lab, where they assisted in RNA-seq data analysis and comparative analysis using R. Emily has experience in independent research as well, with a role as an Independent Researcher at Zhong Lab. Emily also worked as a Research Intern at RIKEN, where they conducted gene expression analysis using CAGE-seq data. Additionally, Emily gained research experience at the UCSD Department of Biological Sciences Laurie Smith Lab, where they carried out lab duties and designed an algorithm for phenotyping bulliform cells. Emily began their research journey as a Student Research Assistant at Laurie Smith Lab, focusing on phosphorylation state-dependent interaction between proteins using various molecular biology techniques.

Emily Kawabata attended UC San Diego where they received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Bioinformatics. Emily completed their education in 2018.
