Matthew Small

VP of Web Development at Podium Education

Matthew Small has a diverse work experience in the field of software engineering and development. Matthew recently joined Google in 2022 as a Senior Software Engineer. Prior to that, they worked at Podium Education as the VP of Web Development from 2021 onwards.

Matthew had a previous stint at Google from 2016 to 2021, where they held the position of Senior Software Engineer. During this time, they led engineering for the ARCore SDK for Unity, aiming to create augmented reality and virtual reality experiences at Android scale. Matthew also worked on bringing the Google Assistant to various wearable devices.

Before joining Google, Matthew was the Software Engineering Manager at West Health from 2014 to 2015. Matthew managed a project focused on creating video games for behavioral therapy in children with autism, collaborating with a cross-functional clinical team. Technologies used included C#, Unity3D, MongoDB, Xbox Kinect, and Android.

Matthew also co-founded Empirical Games LLC in 2012, assuming the role of Chief Technology Officer. The company developed educational games supporting STEM curricula and conducted research studies funded by organizations such as the Gates Foundation and Army Research Lab. Matthew's responsibilities included game development and overseeing technology logistics.

Matthew's early career includes roles as an HPC Computer Science Researcher at Florida State University from 2007 to 2012. Here, they conducted research on accelerating MPI applications and optimized systems-level communication code using C, Infiniband Verbs API, OpenCL, and CUDA. Matthew also worked as an Instructor during this period.

Additionally, Matthew worked as a High-Performance Computing Intern at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 2010 to 2011.

Matthew Small received their Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from the University of South Florida in 2007. Following that, they pursued a PhD in Computer Science at Florida State University, where they completed their degree in 2012.
