Jorge Hernandez has a diverse and extensive work experience history. Jorge began their career in 2002 as an intern at Virginia International Terminals, Inc., where they were responsible for tabulating and analyzing ship data and creating training videos. Jorge then served as a Graduate Assistant at Old Dominion University, assisting the Program Manager of the International Maritime, Ports, and Logistics Management Institute.
In 2004, Hernandez worked as a Port Consultant for the Port of Mayagüez Commission, advising on port privatization and conducting port tours for firms participating in the Request for Proposal process. Jorge also served as a Port Consultant for the Port of Ponce, where they reported to the Board of Management and negotiated collective bargaining agreements with labor unions.
Hernandez's experience in academia includes roles as an Adjunct Professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico, where they taught courses on international transportation management, and as an Academic Consultant at Universidad del Turabo.
Their most recent positions have been at Port Everglades, where they held various roles. Jorge served as the Director of Business Administration, overseeing administrative and strategic support sections such as purchasing, human resources, and risk management. Jorge also led the Port Everglades International Logistics Center public-private partnership as a Project Manager. Additionally, Hernandez held the role of Director of Business Development, responsible for managing strategic business units within Port Everglades' diversified portfolio.
Throughout their career, Hernandez has demonstrated strong leadership, negotiation, and communication skills, and has had significant involvement in various maritime and port-related organizations and initiatives.

- From 1991 to 1997, they attended Caribbean School in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and obtained their High School Diploma.
- From 1997 to 2001, they studied at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico, where they earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.) with a focus on Marketing.
- In 2001, they received a Certificate in International Marketing of Maritime and Port Services from Red Trainmar America y el Caribe.
- From 2001 to 2003, they pursued a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in Port Management at Strome College of Business.
- In 2003-2004, they attended the Institute of Transport and Maritime Management Antwerp at the University of Antwerpen, where they obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Port Management and Transportation Economics.
- In 2017-2018, they participated in the Urban Land Institute Leadership Institute (South Florida / Caribbean) program.
- Since 2019, they have been working towards earning a Professional Port Manager degree from the American Association of Port Authorities.
- Jorge also obtained a certificate from the ULI Southeast Florida/Caribbean Leadership Institute in August 2018.
