John Cárdenas

John Cárdenas has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. John currently works at the Port of Portland as a Sr. Manager for Inclusive Contracting and Business & Workforce Development. Prior to this role, they had their own video services company called John Cárdenas Video Services, where they worked as a Videographer, Editor, and Producer. In this capacity, they collaborated with clients on concept development, created multimedia presentations, and handled various roles such as lighting grip and sound engineer.

Before starting their own business, John worked at Prosper Portland, where they held multiple positions. As a Sr. Construction, Business, and Workforce Equity Project Manager, they led the organization's efforts to promote equity in construction and workforce development. John also served as a Community Engagement Coordinator, where they implemented a community engagement system and enhanced communication between the agency and residents. Additionally, they worked as a Public Affairs Coordinator/Videographer in the Executive Department, creating culturally competent communication tools and coordinating marketing and public relations efforts.

John also had a brief role as an Interim Economic Development Policy Manager at the Office of Mayor Tom Potter. In this position, they worked closely with the mayor and policy staff, leading economic development policy initiatives and establishing partnerships to support small businesses in Portland.

John Cárdenas has a diverse education history. John obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Housing and Economic Development from Portland State University in 2004. Later, in the same year, they also completed a Certificate in Digital Documentary Production from NW Documentary Arts and Media. In 2013, John participated in the Hispanic Metropolitan Leadership Academy, although it is unclear if they obtained any degree or field of study from this program. In 2014, they enrolled at the University of Oregon, where they completed a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Multimedia Journalism and Communications in 2016. In 2017, John attended the Latino Network Unidos Leadership Program. John'sadditional certifications include Senior Fellow from the AMERICAN LEADERSHIP FORUM OF OREGON, obtained in June 2021, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Facilitation from the Center for Equity and Inclusion, obtained in January 2017. Additionally, they obtained a certification in Digital Journalism from the New York Film Academy in June 2008.
