John Melvin Jr.

John Melvin Jr., Ed.D., currently serves as Principal of Duniway Elementary School and Senior Director of Elementary Schools at Portland Public Schools, positions held since July 2018. With a strong focus on creating inclusive environments and improving student outcomes, John has previously been the Principal of James John Elementary School and has extensive experience in school leadership within several districts, including Hayward Unified and Oakland Unified School Districts. Key accomplishments include overseeing educational initiatives at schools with significant populations of low-income and English Language Learner students, guiding schools to earn numerous awards, and strengthening collaborative structures among teachers. John holds a Doctor of Education degree from the University of California, Berkeley, as well as additional degrees from Hamilton College, Mills College, and completed an administrative certification through New Leaders for New Schools.
