Rich Newman's work experience includes serving as the Superintendent for Alpine Union School District since 2016. Prior to that, they were the Director of Innovation for Poway Unified School District. Rich previously held the position of Director II of Learning Support Services for Poway Unified School District starting in 2012. From 2008 to 2012, they served as Principal. Before their district positions, Newman worked as an Education Officer for The Wallace Foundation from 2005 to 2007.
Rich Newman obtained a Masters of Science degree in International Relations and Affairs from Florida State University, which they pursued from 1992 to 1993. Rich then pursued a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego from 2000 to 2005.

PUSD operates 25 elementary schools (K-5), one elementary & middle school combination (TK-8th), six middle schools (6-8), one continuation high school, five comprehensive high schools (9-12), and one adult school. 26 schools are located in the city of San Diego; 12 schools in the city of Poway. The District serves over 36,000 students, and is the third largest school district in the county.
