Rukmini Banerji began their work experience in 1991 as a Research Associate at the University of Chicago. Rukmini then worked as an Associate Program Officer at The Spencer Foundation from 1993 to 1996. In 1996, they joined Pratham Education Foundation as the Director of Assessment and Research and later became the Program Director from 2001 to 2012. Banerji also worked as an International Fellow at the University of Chicago in 2002. From 2008 to 2018, they served as the Director at ASER Centre. Finally, in 2015, they became the Chief Executive Officer of Pratham Education Foundation.
Rukmini Banerji earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, from 1978 to 1981. Rukmini then pursued a Master of Arts in Economics from Delhi School of Economics from 1981 to 1982. Following that, they attended the University of Oxford from 1981 to 1983 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. Rukmini later obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education from the University of Chicago from 1985 to 1991.
