Hortense Hinton-Jackson

Dr. Hortense Hinton retired from a 40 year career in higher education in 2012. She joined Northern Virginia Community College in 2000 as dean of students at its Alexandria campus. She also served as interim vice president for academic and student services and in 2004, was appointed the provost of the Manassas Campus of Northern Virginia Community College where she managed all academic and student services at the campus. In transition to retirement in June 2012, Hinton became special assistant to the president of Northern Virginia Community College and the college’s liaison to the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools. Prior to serving at Northern Virginia Community College, Hinton held administrative positions at Germanna Community College (1988-2000), the University of Virginia (1978-1988) and the University of the District of Columbia (1971-1978).

Hinton has served on the board of directors for the Prince William County – Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce and the Prince William County Economic Development Council. Regionally, she has served on the board of the Virginia Network of the American Council on Education, the Curry School of Education Foundation at the University of Virginia, and the Virginia Equal Opportunity Council. Nationally, she is a member of the American Association of Community College’s President’s Roundtable and its Association of Women in Community Colleges.

Hinton earned a doctorate in counselor education at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, a master’s degree in counseling at the University of District Columbia and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the State University of New York at Geneseo.
