Kristen Slack, PhD has worked in higher education and research since 1999. Kristen began as a Research Assistant Professor at Northwestern University, where they were the Project Manager for the Illinois Families Study. In 2000, they joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an Assistant Professor, eventually becoming an Associate Professor in 2007 and Associate Director in 2009. Kristen was the Interim Director of the Sandra Rosenbaum School of Social Work in 2020-2021, and the PhD Program Chair from 2018-2021. In 2015, Dr. Slack founded Prof2Prof, a web platform for higher education professionals to share their teaching and research ideas, resources, and strategies. In 2017, they founded Information Elevator LLC, where they serve as a keynote speaker on child maltreatment prevention.

Kristen Slack, PhD obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Social Welfare from the University of Chicago in 1999. Prior to this, they obtained their Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Chicago in 1993. Kristen completed their undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, where they earned their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology in 1991.
